Your heat and a/c system is not in any immediate danger when you see this however.

If you hear a hum or rattling kind of sound all the time, chances are it is overworking. Which means you could have a possible air flow issue or maybe even need the ductwork of your central heat and a/c system cleaned out by your local HVAC professional at the local heating and cooling company.
