Dead batteries can really cause thermostat problems.
That’s not something that a lot of people normally check right away, but it’s been a problem for me several times over the years.
Sometimes my thermostat stops working, and I don’t even think about checking the batteries first. I feel kind of dumb whenever that actually turns out to be the problem! This has happened to me several times now! If your thermostat is not working correctly, then that means that nothing else in your HVAC system is going to work right either. Your thermostat is the brain of your entire HVAC operation! Since all thermostats need power, they can be powered by batteries, low voltage wires, and sometimes even both. However, if the power shuts off then your thermostat is not going to work. Of course, that goes for thermostats that are wired in or thermostats that are battery powered. You can check your own thermostat to make sure that the power is working correctly before you call up your HVAC company to come and fix it for you. that will probably end up saving you a lot of money in the long run. I know this because I learned it the hard way! The last time my thermostat stopped working, I checked the batteries and I thought that everything was fine. It turned out that one of my batteries was actually turned the wrong way! I felt like a huge idiot whenever the HVAC technician fixed it for me. He had to charge me for a thermostat repair appointment visit!
