HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

When mom called in tears, I knew there was something wrong.

She told me she couldn’t live alone anymore and asked if my offer for her to temporarily move in with us was still open.

I told her to let us know when she was ready, and we would have her room ready for her. She wanted to know if the following weekend would be too soon. The room was ready, but the bathroom was not yet completed, and my partner and I needed Heating, Ventilation and A/C in that area. I called my hubby and told him mom was moving in ten afternoons. He told me to grab the list of things my friend and I needed for the bathroom, and I needed to call the Heating, Ventilation and A/C dealer and have them install the ductless Heating, Ventilation and A/C system in the room. I then called my sibling-in-law and asked if he was available this weekend. I explained the situation and he said he would be over on Tuesday and could have the bathroom installed by the end of the weekend. My hubby and I were in a mad rush to get the bathroom done, but the Heating, Ventilation and A/C serviceman couldn’t get here until the Tuesday before mom arrived. It surprised me at how rapidly the Heating, Ventilation and A/C was installed. The Heating, Ventilation and A/C serviceman had it installed before my hubby and his sibling had the shower installed, then everything was ready for mom, and all I had to do was go up to the farm and put it up for sale. I knew this would be the hardest part, because I had to close up the house once I packed the few things mom wanted to bring with her. She didn’t realize she had a big bedroom, a large wardrobe, and a bathroom, and was happy to know that she had us and her granddaughter.

I called an associate of mine and asked if he could help me out

Right before my ex-hubby left, he had central cooling system installed in the house. I wasn’t sure why he had a new Heating, Ventilation and A/C system installed if he wasn’t going to be living here, but I thanked him. My ex-hubby and I hadn’t gotten along in years, but I wished him good fortune when he said he had found someone else and was leaving. My ex-hubby and I had already talked about divorce, and we were still friends. I enjoyed the furnace, and it kept me hot and cozy all winter long, but when summer arrived last year, I hated it. The cooling system machine was overworked, and it never cooled the house properly. I was used to my old window cooling system units, and I wanted them back. I went to the basement to see if they were down there. I was planning on turning the central cooling system off and putting the window cooling system units back in. When I didn’t find them in the basement, I looked in the attic, but couldn’t find it. My last resort was to go into the garage. I hadn’t been in the garage for years, because it was so miserable there. Had I known my ex had cleaned it out before leaving, I may have gone in there first. Not only was it cleaned out, but he had the window cooling system units on a shelf. I called an associate of mine and asked if he could help me out. Two hours later, my associate and I had the window cooling system units installed, the central cooling system was detached, and my friend and I were celebrating with a bottle of champagne.

Had someone told me I needed to measure my window before buying a cooling system unit, I would not be in the mess I was in. I walked into the store and told them I needed a window cooling system machine for my bedroom, but nobody said they had different sizes or that they were different BTUs. I knew how large my bedroom was and provided him the dimensions. He promptly figured out various BTUs I needed and pointed out multiple cooling system units that would be suitable for my bedroom. One looked big, and I was afraid it would be too bulky for me to lift and install. I wasn’t small, but I wasn’t a monster like some men I knew. I looked at the smaller one and although it had the same BTU on the label, it weighed a mere fifty pounds. I hefted the AC machine and knew it was the right one for me, and the guy didn’t tell me it had to be plugged on both sides and that there was nothing to fan out and create a tight fit. I got the AC machine home, opened up the box, and took it into my bedroom. I had it installed on the window and the window was down, but I had four inches of open air space on both sides of the window. Now, what was I going to do? The instruction manual said to build a box for the cooling system unit. It was made to go in the wall and not in a window. I called my brother and told him I needed help, because I definitely wasn’t going back for another cooling system unit.

That was perhaps the only really enjoyable surprise that I’ve had.

I just really don’t like surprises of any kind. In fact, I do my best to be prepared so I’m not getting shocked by something that I didn’t foresee. When I’m inside the commercial HVAC of the office, I’m responsible for a lot of things. And I have to prepare for so many different eventualities and scenarios. This eats up a lot of energy and time. But without doing this, I’d leave our company exposed to a myriad of jeopardizing situations. At home, I’m not the one who pays attention to all the details. That designation is my wife’s. She’s on top of anything and everything that is going on in our home. I’m awfully lucky that she’s this way. I can come home to the lovely central air conditioning most days and just relax a bit. Of course, I have my chores to do around the house like changing the air filter on the HVAC equipment. But by and large, I follow my wife’s direction when it comes to helping out around the house. So when I came home to find the air conditioning not working and my wife not at home, I sort of didn’t know quite what to do. I knew that my wife knew all the ins and outs when it came to the HVAC service plan. And I also remember her telling me that the HVAC warranty required only HVAC professionals to do any repair or service. That’s when I just picked up the phone and call the HVAC company. They were able to get the cooling back on in no time and my wife was really pleased that I didn’t void the HVAC warranty.
