HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

The coffee shop where I work has a broken furnace. I have been working here for a long time and usually I really love it. I love making all kinds of coffee and I love getting there early in the mornings before anyone else is awake. I make all of the bagels and the donuts for the front of the store. Most of the people who come in there are there every day and I know most of them. I really enjoy working there most of the time and usually the indoor air quality in the shop is fine, too. Recently, though, we have been having some issues with the heating and cooling system in the shop. We have been there for over ten years now and I don’t think that they have ever replaced the heating and cooling system in the building before. I have no idea how long the HVAC system has been in the building, but I think that it’s been long enough! We have had a really cold winter and I honestly think that we have used the furnace so much that it’s just completely worn out at this point. I know that it sounds crazy, but I think that we broke the furnace because we kept the temperature turned up so high for the past four months. At this point, it doesn’t look like the weather is going to start heating up anytime soon, either. I know that we are going to have to get it fixed because it’s going to be a long time before spring comes.

All I know is that it is a good thing that we got the furnace tuned up before the winter started last year.

We have had the longest winter that I can ever remember having here.

I don’t know why it has been so cold but it seems like winter is just never going to end at this point. I am ready for the temperature to start heating up though, that’s for sure. I wish that the sun would come out already because I am sick and tired of the dark and cold. This past fall, I decided to have the furnace tuned up earlier than I normally do. I usually don’t even have it done unless it’s absolutely necessary, anyway. I hate having to pay a lot of money for HVAC services, that’s for sure. I never even wanted to pay to get the furnace tuned up at all but I knew that it needed to be done. At this point, I am really glad that I broke down and had it done because of the way that the winter has ended up this year. If I had not had the furnace tuned up when I did, then I may have been without a heating system during the coldest part of the year. The HVAC company that I always use has been super busy over the winter. I doubt that I would even have been able to get an appointment for my furnace tune up if I had waited. I wish that it would stop snowing, though! I am ready for the spring.

I live in a quiet suburban neighborhood and enjoy living in my small apartment in peace.

However, my air conditioning unit failed the other day during a really hot day.

The idea of living in a stuffy, hot apartment was unbearable. I knew I had to do something. Regardless, I had no idea how to fix it so I called my father, who is an HVAC technician. Told my dad about the situation and he told me to check the power source and wiring. I didn’t really know what he was talking about so I took a glance at it. I knew nothing of what he was saying. It was basically talking to a foreigner but I still looked. I went to culinary school so anything electronic that you have to mess with wires or whatever is something I’m uncomfortable with. I told him I’m still confused and that this air conditioner and wiring is something I don’t understand. I said I’ll have to call the HVAC company to send someone out. I would ask my dad to come and do it but he lives a few 100 miles from me. He again tried to tell me but after a minute I said I fixed it and thank you. I lied to him on the phone because I knew this wasn’t going anywhere. I then called the HVAC company to have them send out an HVAC technician. I just hope the issue is solved easily. I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg getting this corrected. Also, I really wish I understood what my dad was talking about.

During the day we never have any problems with the thermostat.

• My sister and I live with my aunt ever since our parents passed away.

This is the first winter we have been without them and it’s sad at times. We miss them very much and we talk about them often. It’s just awful that this will be the first holiday without them as well. My aunt does a great job at trying her best to take care of us and she knows our sorrows. She shares them as well since my dad was her brother. Regardless at night things get a little hard for her. She is only 3 years old and things like shadows or my aunt dropping something freaks my sister out. Recently, the heater that kicks on every night because of how cold it is she cries and wakes up in the middle of the night shivering and crawls into bed with me. I can’t do much but tell her it’s going to be ok and I’m here for her. I have talked to my aunt the last few days about how restless my sister has been with the heater kicking on late at night. It scares her so I asked if there was anything she could do. She wasn’t sure but she said she will call the HVAC company to ask if they can send out an HVAC tech to take a look at the heating and cooling system. Maybe the HVAC expert can come over and figure something out? Nights have been long for everyone and hopefully, an HVAC technician can help with the noise.
