HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

The penguins were just fine without the heating system when it broke down at the zoo the other day.

I was worried about all of the animals at the zoo when we got there because the weather was really cold that day.

I don’t usually go places when the weather is super cold outside, but I wanted to take the kids to the zoo while I was still off of work. So I told everyone to bundle up and we all loaded up in the car and we went to the zoo. We are lucky because our zoo is only about 45 minutes away from where we live. I had the heating system in the van on full blast all the way to the zoo because the temperature that day was a frigid 22 degrees. They have a lot of indoor areas at the zoo that are well heated and several places that I think are just about too hot most of the time. The rainforest area, for instance, is always super warm inside and I hate going in there! It feels as if you are walking right into a furnace or something the minute that you pull open the door. I guess that only makes sense, though, since rainforests are nothing if not warm and moist. Anyway, while we were visiting at the zoo, they ended up having an HVAC emergency. We noticed that the heating system inside of several of the buildings weren’t working and we kept getting colder and colder! Then a couple of commercial HVAC technicians went running past us toward the penguin enclosure. However, the penguins were totally fine without a heating system!

The kids have blocked all of the air filters that we have had in our house lately. They are just going crazy with all of the cooking that they are doing lately. I don’t know why they are so interested in cooking lately but I think that it’s because they have been watching all of these cooking shows on TV. They take turns deciding what to cook and then they mess up the entire kitchen for the afternoon playing like they are on a cooking show. I like the fact that they are having adventures and learning all kinds of new things, but I don’t really like the fact that they are ruining the indoor air quality in the house all the time. There is so much smoke and oil and fumes in the house now that I have a hard time breathing sometimes. I always tell the kids to open the kitchen window and the back door whenever they are cooking but the grease and smoke seems to just permeate everything anyway. I keep telling the kids that I’m going to have to spend a fortune on air fresheners and room sprays because of them, but they just keep on cooking. I don’t really want to discourage them from cooking and learning things like that, but I also don’t want to stink up my house all the time, either! I think that I’m going to have to start buying higher quality air filters like HEPA brand air filters. Either that, or I’m going to have to install a whole home air purification system.

I have always thought that using a family owned HVAC company is better than using a bigger, corporately owned one.

Honestly, I really think that this is the case in any sort of business at all. I would much rather go to smaller, family owned businesses than larger ones. That is how it has always been in my experience. I love it when I can use local businesses, no matter what it’s for. I use a small garage for all of my car repairs, and I use a small appliance company for any appliance repairs that I ever need. When it comes to things like my central heating and central air conditioning systems, I use a local, veteran owned HVAC company that I found last year. They are honestly the best company that I have ever used for furnace or air conditioning repairs in the past twenty years. I really like the guys who work there, and I really enjoy supporting a veteran owned business, too. I tell everyone that I would rather use these guys than any other HVAC business that I’ve ever come across. I really mean that, too. They are always really great at repairing anything that I ever need help with and they don’t charge a whole lot, either. Not only that, but they are super friendly and we always have great conversations whenever they come over to do any work for me. Using a family owned company is always better, in my opinion.

Forgetting the HVAC maintenance can end up being a costly mistake for those of us who have purchased an HVAC warranty.

I ended up finding this out the hard way myself because I forgot to get our HVAC system maintained on a regular basis after we purchased it. One of the main reasons that I decided to buy this particular HVAC system in the first place was the fact that it came with a really great HVAC warranty. Then I ended up voiding the warranty without even meaning to do it! When I realized what had happened, I was so mad at myself that I didn’t know what to do. I thought that I was doing really well in life at that point. I mean, I thought that I had it all together but that wasn’t the case at all. I was trying to make sure that I was juggling everything like work, the kids, my marriage, and everything else. I thought that I was doing okay, too! I guess I wasn’t doing as well as I thought I was, though, because I missed out on something that was really important. I missed out on getting our HVAC system maintained when it was supposed to be! The way that the HVAC warranty was set up, you had to get the furnace looked at regularly by a qualified heating and technician. Without them signing their name and turning in the paperwork, the warranty was voided automatically. What a waste of money that ended up being for me! I still can’t believe that I did that.
