My brother wanted to be an HVAC technician.

From the time my brother was old enough to say HVAC, he wanted to be an HVAC technician.

He wanted to be just like our dad, who owned the local HVAC company.

When they offered tech school over his last four years of school, he asked if they offered HVAC classes. The closes he could get to HVAC, was if he took up plumbing. Plumbing would get him a job if people wanted to have a boiler system installed, but it wasn’t going to help with traditional HVAC. My dad told him that when he was old enough to carry the tools, he could help him on his HVAC calls. My brother was so excited that he couldn’t wait to get big enough and old enough. When he turned twelve, my father took him on his first HVAC emergency service call. He had my brother handing him tools, which he knew what every specialty tool was. He had him working flushing lines in the HVAC systems. He even allowed him to help with some repairs. Within two years, my brother was ready to work on our HVAC system. He did little other than change air filters, or check the air ducts, but he was helping. By the time he was old enough to go to HVAC school, I thought he would be over wanting to be an HVAC technician. Instead of being over it, he was more excited. He could finally fulfill his dreams and go to HVAC school to be an HVAC technician and work in our dad’s HVAC company.

There was so much ice on the air conditioning unit.

Winter was over and my husband and I ventured out to the lake to see if there was any damage to our summer cottage.

Other than seeing an air conditioning unit with almost a foot of ice covering it, everything looked surprisingly good. The wind that came off the lake, made for cool breezes during the summer, but it wreaked havoc with the house during the winter. I thought we should try to chip some of the ice off the air conditioning unit, but my husband told me to wait. The AC unit sat out in the weather all year long, and he wasn’t sure we should bother with the ice. He thought it would be okay if we allowed the ice to melt naturally, but he wanted to check with the HVAC company. When he finally got through to someone, they asked how long we planned on staying at the cabin. The one HVAC technician lived close to where we had our cottage, and he said he would stop by on his way home. When the HVAC technician stopped by, he said my husband was right about not chipping the ice off. We could have done damage to the AC unit if we were poking it with ice picks or knives. It was okay to let the ice melt naturally, and other than a little extra cleaning, the air conditioning should be fine when summer arrived. I had a smart husband, but he wasn’t an HVAC technician. I was glad to hear the same thing come from the HVAC technician, and it made me feel more comfortable.

Lightning hit our air conditioning unit.

I was standing in the kitchen last summer, when a freak storm came out of nowhere.

It was from bright sunshine, to cloudy and raining.

The lightning was lighting up the sky and making the dark light up. I was just walking away from the sink when I saw a flash of lightning and heard the sound of metal and then I saw smoke. Lightning had struck our air conditioning unit. The AC unit quit working, and there was nothing more I could do. I called the HVAC company, but they weren’t going to come out until the storm passed. They said the storm should be over in an hour, and they would send someone out right after. Two hours later, the HVAC technician was standing in our backyard, with water above his ankles. The air conditioning unit had a huge hole in the front, where the lightning had struck. He said there was nothing he could do for the AC unit, and it was ‘dead in the water’. He laughed at his own joke, but I didn’t think he was funny. It was the middle of summer, and we couldn’t go without air conditioning. He said we would need to wait a few days, because they had to order a new air conditioning unit and install it. They couldn’t install an air conditioning unit until the water soaked into the ground, and with the storms going through, he was afraid that could take a week or more. I groaned thinking about going for a week or more without air conditioning, but I understood why they couldn’t do the installation while standing in a puddle of water.

The grocery stores AC unit wasn’t working.

I walked into the grocery store lasted week and it was so hot that I was afraid my ice cream would melt before I got through the checkout line.

I stood there for a couple of minutes and finally asked what was wrong with the air conditioning. We lived in the south and the air conditioning should be on. The clerk told me the air conditioning was broken, and as soon as the HVAC company thought it was okay to show up, they would. I looked at her and told her that I was sure someone was on the way, if the manager had actually made the call. When I finally got home, my husband was sitting at the table. I asked if they had gotten a phone call from the grocery store. The air conditioning was broken, but no one had arrived to repair it. He called the HVAC company to see if they had received any phone calls from the grocery store. They said no one had called. He put on his hat and jumped in the service van. He said he was going to the grocery store to see if he could help with the repair. I went with him and when we got to the store, there still wasn’t any HVAC technicians around. We went back to the office, and the manager sat on his chair with his head in his hands. He was wondering where the HVAC technician was. My husband asked who they called, and when he answered my husband frowned. He told him that was funny, because he owned the HVAC company and there were no calls for HVAC service at this location. The manager forgot to call.
