HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

My partner Max and I weren’t cheap, but all of us were very frugal.

We didn’t have money to throw away, and in purchasing a more up-to-date furnace, Max wanted to get the best for what we could afford.

We didn’t want to trade savings for efficiency, but all of us didn’t want to trade efficiency just to save a little piece of money either. We wanted to compromise between savings and efficiency. After a long and serious discussion and a lot of research, all of us knew what all of us wanted in efficiency ratings. Max figured that for the extra money all of us would spend on an energy efficient furnace, all of us would save on the energy bills. This would be a greater payback for us, than just saving money. With the cost of energy rising nowadays, every penny all of us saved was a big plus! Oil is now over $6 a gallon, and all of us want to use as little as possible… Until it becomes a necessity to use the oil, Max and I are using our wood-burning stove, but all of us can only get wood for so long. Once the snow starts falling, it cuts our wood shed off to us because of where it is located. That’s when we’ll be using the central furnace. We have a bit of time to decide which furnace all of us want to get, but if snow comes earlier, it cuts our decision time in half; Next week, we should purchase the up-to-date furnace, and keep it on just enough to keep the chill out of our house until the wood-burning stove warms the house up. Energy Conservation and quality of life are our two chief troubles this winter.

When I needed an up-to-date furnace, I needed the same money-back guarantee I acquired from every other vendor I had purchased from, but i needed to make sure that if I didn’t enjoy the furnace, then they would refund our money or supply me another one. I said this to the HVAC service tech, and he gave me an odd look, and he told me he wasn’t sure that was possible, they offered me plenty of choices for a furnace, and a professional HVAC dealer would explain the main difference between every furnace and tell me which was the most efficient in heating and energy. The HVAC dealership would measure and take copious notes so they would get a furnace that suited our heating needs and those in efficiency that I asked for, but even though he gave me answers that would suit the everyday person, I still wasn’t cheerful. I wanted a guarantee that if I wasn’t pleased with how the furnace worked over the first sixty afternoons, I could return it. He eventually told me that he could not make that guarantee, and I would need to ask the HVAC dealership owner when he came to the house to discuss the up-to-date furnace with me. I’m not sure if I’ll follow through with the purchase from this corporation, especially if I don’t get some kind of guarantee. I don’t want to be stuck with a furnace for the next 20 or more years, if it isn’t exactly what I want. I’m thinking I’ll talk to several other HVAC companies in the area, and see if they’ll offer me some kind of guarantee. If they don’t, I’ll go with the best deal on the furnace I want.

I loved my friends, but there are times when I want to be home and not run around.

Christmas is one of those times, and last year, they invited themselves to stay with me over Christmas. I resented their thinking it was okay to invade my home when I was with my parents for the holidays. They thought it was so cool to be there, and be in a family situation, which I couldn’t understand. I thought all families shared the holidays together. The only time I remember not having the entire family together for the holidays was when my brother was in Iraq. There were times when my dad would be out working on someone’s HVAC system so they had a furnace for Christmas. There was one time when he helped my uncle put in a fireplace so he had a chimney for Santa to come down, but that was all family. When my brother came home, it was a perfect Christmas. My friends and I were talking about our most memorable Christmases when mom walked in. She reminded me of when dad had to go out to work on a fireplace. The dad got stuck in the chimney, and he had to help get him out. My one friend started to cry and said we had such amazing stories. She hadn’t seen her mom or dad in over ten years. They all had similar stories, and I suddenly felt bad for not wanting them around. Although my dad being an HVAC technician took him away often, we still always had a family Christmas in spite of his job.

After retiring, my husband and I sold our huge house and bought a small one-bedroom house. We thought this would deter a lot of sleepover company but we were wrong. Our family was inquisitive and wanted to see if we really did downsize. Our downsizing got the point across to our family, but not to other people. Last week, the electricity went off in our neighborhood. There were a lot of people who were without heat. Six of our closest neighbors didn’t have generators, but we did. My husband insisted on a generator so we didn’t go without heat or air conditioning. We ended up with twelve unexpected guests in our one-bedroom home. There was no way we could leave them in the cold when our furnace was working. We didn’t have a lot of extra lights on, which kept it cozy inside, but the furnace was the most important reason for having the generator. One of my best friends said we were gems for allowing everyone to stay in our house, while my husband yawned. He said he learned a long time ago; the importance of a good HVAC system and a generator to keep it working at all times. She asked if he was an HVAC technician, and he nodded while yawning again. I told him to go to bed, and I would be in shortly. My shortly was when the sun was coming up. We didn’t get power back until almost 5:30 the next morning. Everyone left to go back to their warm homes and get some sleep, but my husband was just getting up.
