After working in the heating business as a manager for ten years, I was ready to open my practice.

The only problem was that I needed to gain the technical experience of the HVAC professionals.

I knew that to get a working business plan, I should talk to industry experts. Information about the business from people who owned such a business would benefit me. I started as an HVAC technician at my previous company. The meeting lasted almost two hours. I asked many questions in all areas, including the installation process and the steps involved in heat pump service. I learned a few things about setting up a business from my colleague, including how to keep the electric furnace providing quality heating. One of the things included advising customers to schedule at least one furnace/heater tune-up every year to keep it in good condition. After collecting a lot of information from different heating contractors, it was now upon me to sit down and come up with a great business plan for a homeowner solution. The business would involve dealing with different heating equipment, including dual fuel systems. I would have an HVAC supplier department retailing other heating devices and accessories. Eventually, I planned to have several stores spread over the town. The business would also include a maintenance department that handles equipment repairs or indoor comfort service. After a week of going back and forth with the plan, I finally came up with a workable plan for the business. I had the start-up capital but still needed to find an investor.

My best friend Christy and I have always wanted to attend the same university. We both applied to a university in the city and were accepted. We were delighted, and we made so many plans. My mother had to buy a new heating device since my grandmother was too old and her body could not handle living in such a cold environment. The conversation went on and on until they found a more exciting topic which was me. Talking about heating devices and indoor comfort was way more interesting than grilling me about when I would settle down or at least introduce my partner to them. It was not high on my list and did not sit well with them.
