HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.

That’s something I had heard for a really long time.

It was almost a mantra for my dad. He believed fervently that we sometimes got the stuff we needed instead of what we wanted. But that could always come in different forms. For me, I was always complaining about the air conditioning in the gym. My wife never had this complaint. But then again, she is such a gym rat and just loves to sweat. I’m not a gym rat and like to have decent heating and cooling during a workout. It’s all I can to do just to get myself motivated to go workout. So when I would walk inside the gym only to be hit with a wall of heat and humidity, it did nothing but sap my motivation. I’m not sure if it was the commercial HVAC equipment or the way the thermostat was used but, I just couldn’t get comfortable in that place. So I wished that I could just workout inside a place that had decent HVAC equipment. Well, the pandemic hit and I ended up getting my wish in a very round about way. Since we couldn’t use the gym due to Covid, we gave up the gym membership. However, we soon had a home gym in our basement. My wife scoured the area for used equipment and we got to working out at home. I had the HVAC company come out to install a ductless heat pump. And there I was enjoying great air conditioning while working out.

It’s just so nice to walk into my house and want to stay there.

That’s not at all the way it was for a long time. Coming home for the day was supposed to be great. The thoughts of opening the door to wonderful HVAC comfort at the end of my day was always in my mind. And the heating and cooling was great indeed. Yet, when I opened the door, I was met with a wall of indoor odor that really took me back. I mean, it was awful. In fact, until we solved the situation, I was looking to stay inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office just to avoid walking in that door at night. That’s when it became more than crystal clear that I needed to do something about the indoor air odor. But, it’s not like my wife and I hadn’t already attempted to thwart the indoor air odors. We used every kind of deodorizer that we could find. From candles to sprays to even those ionizers, we tried desperately to solve the indoor air odor problem. Finally, we decided to turn to the indoor air professionals so we paid a visit to the HVAC professionals. It was there that we got our first education when it came to indoor air quality. The deodorizers weren’t aiming at the real problem which was destroying the bacteria in the air that was causing the problem. So we had the whole home air purification system installed inside the HVAC equipment. It didn’t take but a couple of hours before we noticed a difference. By the next day, the house smelled glorious.

I’ll be the first to admit that I too was not making the cabin a priority in my life.

And that was such a weird turn of events given how important that place was to me for such a long time. This cabin was not easy to get to nor did it have the amenities of home like central air conditioning. The cabin was as basic has it could get. And I think my father was keen to keep it that way. The cabin and the property it sat on were so important when it came to balance in my dad’s life. We had a really nice home with great heating and cooling. My mom didn’t work and took care of the home and family. Dad worked a lot but he was always interested in what was going on with us kids. It was a great way to grow up. You could just about set your watch to when dad would swoop us kids up for a long weekend at the cabin. Mom stayed behind to enjoy the peace and quiet along with her great HVAC. Even after dad died, we tried to get up there at least four or five times a year. But it was clear, that we needed to upgrade the cabin if we were going to keep it a part of our family traditions. So we coaxed a buddy who is an HVAC technician to help up us with the upgrade when it came to heating and cooling. He helped us install 3 ductless heat pumps inside the cabin. Along with the other renovations, having residential HVAC has been a really great thing. And with the updated cabin, I’m getting up there a whole lot more and the kids even want to come now too.

I know it’s full on summer and the central air conditioning has kicked on during the heat of the day and into each evening.

Still, I can’t quite get over how awesome it was this past winter to enjoy a warm, cozy house without huge HVAC heating bills.

I’m still thinking about it and I’m still sort of proud that my efforts paid off. Since we bought this house, I had intentions that were good when it came to winter prep. But my good intentions sort of got sidetracked by my laziness. Fall weekends had been pretty sacred for me most of my life. I’ve always been such a big football fan that I seemed to get even more obsessed with every new year. So the more football I watched from the HVAC comfort of my living room, the less time there was for winter prep. And of course, I spent the rest of the winter complaining about the high price of HVAC heating. That behavior finally came to an end this past fall. This was the first fall that I completely committed to doing the necessary winter prep to save on heating costs. And it was way easier than I had thought it might be. All I had to do was follow the guidelines from the HVAC company website. I was able to seal up the house in no time and still catch the late afternoon football games. The heating costs were reduced so dramatically that I’m still talking about as the central air conditioning is now the topic of HVAC conversations.
