HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

I have the world’s worst allergies.

All too often, I get hit with allergy attacks that are so bad I have to cancel all my plans for the day. I’ve become an encyclopedia for weird allergy remedies that have worked to help me overcome bad symptoms, but even then I just have to wait until my body finally gets over it all. Something that I found especially helpful is Sitting in front of any kind of heat source to soothe my symptoms. I’ve always said it’s good to sweat things out when you aren’t feeling well, so occasionally I relax in front of our portable gas furnace to get through it. Sometimes, I will turn up the heat with reckless abandon in hopes of relief from my allergy symptoms, although my energy bill costs soar as a result of this technique. Luckily, I have an energy-saving heater. Yes, it’s definitely true that sitting next to a heat source can relieve allergy symptoms. However, I would only recommend doing this for short spans of time, because furnaces get incredibly hot and having that direct heat on your face for too long might even cause minor burns. The last way that I provide heat to my body when going through an allergy attack is to use the gas furnace from a steam inhaler, which is sort of like a water gas furnace that opens up the sinus passages. I need all of these methods and more to treat my allergy symptoms.

My parents have been living in their beloved house for more than twenty years.

• They’ve made a number of renovations over the past decade, so that I hardly know the home that I grew up in.

I miss the nostalgic feeling I would get returning home and seeing things as they were in my childhood, but now everything is transformed so it doesn’t look the same. I still question whether there was any real need for their most recent renovation, which was to update their central air conditioner plan with a multi split a/c. I have gathered that a multi split a/c involves numerous small units that are spread throughout the home, which provide cool air in the same way that a window A/C unit might. I can’t for the life of me understand why a regular HVAC unit, which has air vents spread throughout the home that sends out air that comes from a central a/c, is not a superior design. The home has had a central a/c for the entire time it has been standing, so I was shocked that they decided to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a pointless project. Their rationale was that they don’t go upstairs often because nearly all of the rooms that they use on a regular basis are downstairs, so having a central a/c pump air up there was redundant. I am of the opinion that switching to a multi split a/c likely decreased the value of the home, so I’m certain that was not a sound long-term decision. I wish they had consulted me or another family member before making such a big decision but it is their house, after all.

My acquaintance began a commercial meal prepping company last year and it’s been quite the hit! She makes all sorts of healthful, yet delicious meals, plus her prices are pretty affordable all things considered. I am also a chef and I have been thinking about opening a food truck. She gave me a tour of her place of work to see my reaction to it. One of the biggest annoyances about her work space is that the a/c is controlled by a very cheap landlord. The landlord makes her turn off the a/c when she leaves for the afternoon, and this is a grievance of hers because it gets kind of hot overnight. Because she is storing food there, she feels it is counterintuitive to turn the air conditioner off for any amount of time, so that nothing spoils. Luckily, she has powerful refrigerators and freezers so nothing has spoiled yet, but it would still be helpful for other dry goods that are left on the counter if the a/c stayed on. The other thing that is annoying about the a/c being off is that when she arrives the next day, She has to wait for the air conditioner to make the room comfortable again. That means that she is hot and perspiring as she tries to get everything ready. I can imagine this being especially challenging during the hottest months of the year, so I told her that she should speak to her landlord about this air conditioner rule. It doesn’t make a lick of sense to shut down a commercial a/c every single evening. There are better ways to try and save money.

My friends and I go out every weekend. We need the chance to unwind because we all have pretty stressful occupations. So it’s great for us to go out and destress from the week. The five of us love Friday nights at one bar in particular. It has amazing specials plus a genuinely lively karaoke night on Fridays, so we love to go to dance and sing. It’s also a wonderful bar to stay for a while because the air conditioner is perfectly calibrated for a comfortable night of drinking. Having a cold a/c in a bar is the most comfortable because drinking naturally causes the temperature of the body to increase. Some bars have faulty air conditioners, or no air conditioner at all, which makes it almost impossible to appreciate the night. When you don’t have cool air wafting over you when you’re getting saucy, you might as well have a furnace blazing in front of you. One sign of a terrible air conditioner is seeing a big crowd of people standing outside of the bar just to catch some fresh air, when they should be inside having a good time. Our favorite bar has amazing zone-based climate control, so you can relax anywhere and get cool air on you. Even though they keep it cool, the A/C isn’t overly cold. That way your fingers don’t freeze as you hold a cold mug of beer. I wonder what they keep the temperature control at, I think it would be cozy for my own house. I hope that our Friday night tradition continues for a good long while, because it honestly helps me cope with life.
