HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

My wife and I met 10 years ago.

She was working as an HVAC repair technician and I was also working in the same industry.

The two of us hit it off at an educational conference that we had to attend for work. My wife and I talked over dinner and then we also had a nice conversation over breakfast. When we went back to the city, neither one of us wanted to say goodbye. We were living an hour away from each other, so we dated for 6 months before our relationship progressed further. I didn’t want to waste any time, so I asked my wife to marry me. We bought a house and two years later we decided to open our own HVAC repair and installation business. My wife and I work together to get all of the job’s done. We also have three employees that help out. Each one of the employees work full-time hours. There are times when I have to hire more responsible and competent HVAC technicians. I picked up a commercial job replacing all of the HVAC components for the city. I knew the job was going to require several additional technicians, so I went to the staffing agency. I didn’t want to waste time hiring more individuals when I would have to lay them off when the job was over. I went to the staffing agency and they found five experienced HVAC technicians and I hired them on a part-time basis. When the job is over, they will be done and I won’t have to fire or lay anyone off.

Regular system maintenance is very important for the health and longevity of your AC system. Throughout the year, the air conditioning system goes through regular wear and tear. In order to be certain that your AC unit is ready for the summer and the Heat and humidity, a full system maintenance tune up is suggested. Regular system maintenance includes all of the heating and air conditioning components as well as the ductwork. I prefer to have a maintenance appointment scheduled for the AC in the middle of april. Around here the temperatures tend to get warm and humid during that time of the year. Waiting longer than that is risky in my opinion. This year, I scheduled the maintenance appointment in the first week of May and temperatures were already 90° outside. I wanted to schedule the system maintenance earlier than that, but I was busy and completely forgot. Thankfully there were no problems with the AC unit. In fact, the maintenance technician told me that the evaporator foil still looked brand new. The AC system is 3 years old. Hearing that parts of the system still look new made me feel good about the maintenance that I do on my own. I change the air filter monthly and I make sure to keep the ductwork clean and free of debris. I also clean the condenser line and the drain. It only takes me about thirty minutes each month to handle the service and it helps the indoor air quality and the monthly energy bills. There’s no downside to taking care of your heating and AC components.

This morning, I had a call from a customer that had an issue with her air conditioning system.

The woman was certain that she needed a new system, due to the age of her air conditioner and heat pump.

I was the service technician assigned to the call. As soon as I arrived, I noticed the cute and interesting lawn ornaments in the front yard. They looked like gnomes, but they were all naked. It was probably one of the most interesting lawn displays that I have ever seen. I’m surprised no one in the neighborhood complains about the display, tio be honest. I told the woman that I was going to begin by troubleshooting all of the issues that could be a problem. One of the first things that I noticed was a problem with the air filter. It was very dirty and dusty. I asked a customer when the last time was that she changed the air filter and she could not remember. I explained to the customer how important it can be to change the air filter and why. I also told the customer that due to the fact that she has multiple pets in her home, she should be changing the air filter regularly and that means once each month. I performed a full system maintenance appointment and inspected every single part of the interior and exterior. I did not believe that the customer needed a new air conditioner, but I’m sure the tune-up helped. The customer should save money now that the system is running cleanly and efficiently.

My girlfriend and I plan to go to a party at the beach on Saturday.

• One of her best friends was having the party and I agreed to go.

I’m not the type of person that usually likes to go to the beach and spend time with people, but I knew that the party was important to my girlfriend. On Friday afternoon, I was supposed to go home at 6:00 p.m. The boss gave me a last minute HVAC repair and I was stuck at the job site until midnight. I didn’t get home until it was 1:30 in the morning. We were supposed to get up at 8:00 to go to the beach. My girlfriend knew that I worked late, but she still insisted that I get up at 8:00 a.m. to go to the beach with her friends. I was extremely cranky and I really didn’t want to go. After working late on the HVAC repair, the last thing I wanted to do was entertain a bunch of people at the beach. I wanted my girlfriend to be happy though, so I got up and took a shower. I actually had a pretty good time at the beach and a couple of people wanted to pick my brain about heating and cooling options. It was nice to be the person at the party with all of the notes and information. That rarely happens when I am spending time with my girlfriend’s friends. Most of them are city people that work in an office and don’t talk to blue collar people like me.
