The grass certainly isn't always greener

I recently moved from the shipping department in my office building up into an actual office cubicle job.

The basement where we dealt with shipping orders didn’t really have any climate control to speak of, so it was always either very hot down there or very cold bending on the season.

I got transferred in June, so I was really looking forward to actually being able to work in the air conditioning. Well, I certainly got the air conditioner I was anticipating. Actually, I got way more air conditioner than I needed. It is absolutely freezing up there in that office! I haven’t met the manager of the floor yet, but I’m pretty sure he’s the Snow Miser. I saw the thermostat read out recently saying it was 69 degrees. Was it some sort of sick joke? It’s the most freezing 69 degrees I’ve ever experienced! I’m pretty sure 40 degrees on a sunny day outside would not feel as cold! Maybe it’s the humidity in the air, because for some reason, the cold is a bit wet. I even smell the taint of mildew in the air. It doesn’t help that my desk is directly below an air vent. I can’t believe it, but I’m actually missing my old job in a not climate controlled environment. I’ve talked to coworkers, and they simply treat it like a given torture that they have to endure. I figured out very quickly why they all wear extra layers. One guy even has a mini portable space heater under his desk! I did mention it was June, right?

The most important thing at a restaurant

When I go out to a restaurant, my primary concern is whether the food is good. If the food is delicious, I am willing to forgive many other aspects of the dining experience. If the waitstaff treats me poorly, but still brings my order as requested, and it’s delicious, I will be coming back to that restaurant. If the bathrooms aren’t kept in the best condition, to say the least, I will go elsewhere. I did not go to the restaurant to use their bathrooms, after all. I also thought I was willing to let go of whether or not the climate control was good until recently. My favorite Mexican restaurant usually has a really good air conditioner. I know it’s really good because I never notice it, I’m just comfortable. The food is fabulous. Their burritos are stuffed with so much juicy shredded meat and cheese, they’re to die for, and you may very well pay with your life eventually. However, I went there with my friends last Friday night. Friday of all nights, and their air conditioner was completely busted, it would seem. The place was still packed. Like I said, their food is awesome. However, I have to admit that I was considerably uncomfortable. Naturally, I still poured on the hot sauce when my order came. I don’t know what I expected to happen, but as you can well imagine, I was sweating literal buckets halfway into my meal. So yeah, food may be awesome at a restaurant, but in the middle of the summer, you’re going to want to have the air conditioner running and running well!

The great outdoors aren't for me!

I would like to be a rugged outdoorsman.

I enjoy the romantic aspects of just literally living in a log cabin up in the mountains with nothing but the pine trees and the grizzly bears keeping you company, really I do.

But after a recent camping trip, I’ve realized that my romanticized ideas of such a lifestyle are really nothing more than a fantasy for me. The reason is simple: it sucked. Everything about the trip sucked. The heat and direct sun exposure during the day, the bugs constantly flying into my ear, and the campfire stinging my eyes and burning my face off at night. I can go on, but suffice to say that I much prefer a climate controlled space instead. I can sit in my living room with the air conditioning running as I watch some movie about the great outdoors, or even a nature program. That is the only way that I will ever experience such things again, and it’s really getting the best of both worlds. I get to actually be comfortable and enjoy the temperature that I desire, and I get to see nature’s beauty. Thinking about it, it’s the same for the winter, really. Snowfall can be a beautiful thing, but it’s much more beautiful when you’re watching it fall outside a frosted window pane, while you’re nice and cozy inside your holiday home, as the furnace warms your heart and soul, just like it should be. Humans fought long and hard to conquer the elements, and we finally have. We might as well enjoy it.

If your air conditioner isn’t working, there might be a simple solution

When an air conditioner starts doing the exact opposite thing that it is designed to do obviously it will frustrate you a little bit.

An air conditioner is supposed to blow cool air into your home to relieve you from the heat outside that would otherwise cause you to sweat and languish in discomfort.

That’s why, when it starts blowing hot air, you might be tempted to flip your lid. But worry not, for the solution may very well be a simple one that will not cost you very much of your time and money. The very first thing that you want to do, much in the same vein as checking to see if the plug is in the wall so to speak, is to check the status of your thermostat. It may be low on batteries, or the batteries may be entirely depleted. If this is not the case, make sure it’s set to “cool”. Yes, that is actually worth mentioning. You would be surprised. If fresh batteries and setting it to cool isn’t doing the trick, you may need to reset your circuit breaker. Now, ruling out the possibility of the thermostat having an issue, we move on to other possibilities. Have you remembered to change your air filters? You see, what happens when you don’t change those things, is that they get clogged with the dirt that they’re supposed to be filtering. Once their capacity for dirt has been reached, you’re not going to be getting any cool air blowing through, that’s for sure. So, switch them out! If you have exhausted these two possibilities, you’ll probably need to call out an HVAC technician, because something a little more serious is going on.
