HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

I wasn’t so sure on the idea of getting a new thermostat, but my roommate was determined to get one.

I am exactly the kind of person that does not like change. Once I find something that works for me, I am probably not going to let it go for a long time. My roommate however, is the polar opposite. She loves to try anything and everything, and because of this, we have had some issues. So when the thermostat was having issues, my roommate was immediately wanting to go out and get a new one, preferably a smart thermostat. I already didn’t like the idea of a nest thermostat in our shared home, but I definitely didn’t like the idea of already going out and getting a new thermostat. Just because the dial thermostat has had a few issues as of recently, does not mean we need to rush out and get a new one. I am not a fan of going out and spending money unless we have a good reason to. However, even as I was thinking it, I could see my roommate already on a local heating and A/C corporation website looking at all of their available options. I wanted to call a heating and A/C corporation and ask them their opinion, but I couldn’t help but to be afraid that they would side with my roommate. I don’t know, but I really don’t like the idea of getting a new thermostat anytime soon. Especially when our current thermostat is still functioning.

I really needed some good news today.

I don’t know what has been happening lately, but my luck hasn’t been very great lately.

It seems like I have been getting nothing but bad luck. So after an exhausting day at work and getting stuck in rush hour traffic, and then having a flat tire, I was ready for some good news. And I was hoping that I would hear some good news from my heating and air conditioning specialist. Why? Because even though I arrived home late, I was expecting the air conditioning technician to still come out and look at my air conditioner. I had an appointment scheduled today. My air conditioning unit broke down a few days ago, and the local HVAC corporation close to me is almost never busy, so it didn’t take very long to get them out here to see me. I am hoping that it is something minor that is wrong with the cooling device, because I don’t think I could take any more bad news. As I said before, I arrived home pretty late, actually later than when my A/C specialist was supposed to come over. However, the A/C tech was actually late as well. So then it was just a waiting game. Finally, about 30 minutes later, a heating and cooling worker arrived. He was pretty straight to the point, and didn’t talk much. He took his time looking at the A/C unit, and when he came over to me, my hopes were shot down when he told me that it was pretty serious. Serious enough to consider replacing the entire HVAC machine! I guess my bad luck continues.

My wife and I were lucky enough to be able to retire nearly 10 years before we thought we would. I worked at the same place since I got out of college. In fact, the company I retired from was the same company I interned with during summers in college. I loved working inside the zone controlled HVAC of those offices. My colleagues were great and I had a real passion for work. Even in my mid 50’s I was still enjoying what I did for a living. My wife was the main care giver to our kids and had developed her own business decorating homes and businesses. This allowed her to have complete control over her schedule. But when the company offered me nearly a full pension at 57, we just couldn’t turn it down. So we upgraded the HVAC equipment in our home and sold it. Then we moved south and bought the smaller bungalow where we live today. When my wife wanted a place with a sunroom, I was skeptical. The summer heat was brutal so I couldn’t see the value. But we did it anyway. These days, that was one of the best decisions we ever made. All we had to do was add a ductless heat pump. The HVAC professionals made that process both painless and easy. Now that we are slowing down after being retired for 20 years, having that sunroom with great air conditioning is just so valuable to me. I feel like I can get out in the sun even on the days that my body isn’t feeling to great.

Whenever I have people visit during the summer, there is always one unanimous declaration.

That would be that this sort of summer heat is just brutal. I can’t exactly argue that point really. But when you’ve been in this region for as long as I have, I guess you just get more acclimated to the heat. Still, I wouldn’t want to go through a summer without the benefit of residential HVAC. This is just a most important tool to manage the summer heat and humidity. As much as I’ve gotten accustomed to the summers being just smoking hot and thick, I’m sure thankful to have great HVAC cooling in my house. Without that air conditioning, I’m not so sure that I could even live here all summer. That makes me think about the generations before me who actually did live without the benefits of HVAC cooling. I’m in my 50’s and I’ve had quality heating and air in every structure I lived in. That’s with the exception of college. I went to school further north and there was no air conditioning in the dorm. But man did we ever get a ton of radiant heating. But my dad, he grew up here and the home he spent his childhood in didn’t have any sort of residential HVAC. Residential HVAC wasn’t really available until well into the 50’s. My dad remembers how early they had to get up to get stuff done on the farm before the heat set in. I can’t imagine that sort of life. The only bit of cooling they got was from shade, a breeze and maybe a hand fan.
