HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

When I first started off in college, I rented a small apartment where I had to use a window AC unit.

I actually bought the cooling unit from the local hardware store where I was working.

I got an employee discount and I bought the cooling unit while it was on sale too, so I saved a lot of money on that cooling machine. It came with a nifty remote control and everything. Well, I also remember a time when some shady looking kids came into the store. I was watching them carefully thinking for some reason that they were going to try to steal something. Sure enough, they went to the air filter section and tried to shove a couple of air filters under their shirts. Imagine me watching these kids with these bulky shirts loaded with air filters and them trying to get away. I ended up calling security and I helped go after the kids. They ended up ditching the air filters, but those things were already damaged. We had to file a police report and I ended up providing a description of the culprits. They said they had reports of other businesses in the area who also had items stolen and they suspected these might be the same kids causing all this trouble. I remember wondering if they tried to steal the air filters because they couldn’t afford to purchase new ones. It must be tough not being able to afford anything, but you have to live honestly and get a job to get by in life.

Ever since my brother was killed in the line of duty serving as a police officer, everybody in the family has been devastated.

Our child especially took it hard because he was very close with his uncle.

He even took him out a few times even though we didn’t want our son to be in any danger. Things went just fine though and our son’s life was changed pretty much. He wanted to be out there in the community helping people and trying to save lives. There was no stopping him when he went to the police academy to train and become an official police officer. He did great work and it’s not like we ever doubted our child. We knew he could do anything that he put his mind to. He said while training to be an officer, it wasn’t easy, sort of like boot camp he supposed. He said they wouldn’t even have the AC system on when doing most of their training exercises. Apparently they did this thing called ‘making it rain’ where they would make everybody work so hard, the room would rain sweat. Hearing that made me feel kind of sick, thinking of that poor air quality with no air conditioning. I’m glad I never had to deal with anything like that myself and I appreciate my climate control system immensely. That’s why I take care of the HVAC with regular maintenance and air filter changes. So now our son serves the community regularly, and we worry about him all the time even though he always says he’s careful.

When my wife and I moved to the area with our family, my first thought was to find some good home services.

We needed a lot of things done to the house including renovations on the fireplace, maintenance on the HVAC equipment, plumbing repairs and a few other things.

I called a few different local contractors. I was surprised when I called the first HVAC company and I couldn’t get anybody on the phone. I figured they must’ve been terribly busy or something. I ended up calling another HVAC company though and they answered right away and I told them I needed an HVAC worker to come out to provide a tune-up for our cooling system. I also asked if they did fireplace services and I was happy when they said they did! So I said I needed to have my fireplace cleaned out as well. So the HVAC professional came out and did phenomenal work. He said he always loved working with fireplaces since he was a youngster and he helped his father back in those days. He said we had a nice fireplace that would last us forever so long as we kept up with it regularly every year. He got the HVAC system working well too and advised us that we save up some cash for a new HVAC installation a few years down the road. That was some helpful advice. It was funny when the other HVAC company eventually called us back. They said they have been very busy on some commercial projects, which was understandable. I’m glad they called back, but we already had our HVAC taken care of by another local contractor.

I definitely was proud of my son when he first became a homeowner, but he wasn’t too willing to go for appropriate homeowner solutions at first.

For some reason, he seemed to think that his HVAC equipment was going to last forever without him having to keep up with maintenance or anything.

He had a lot to learn from the beginning, but fortunately, I was there to help him. I started off with giving him simple energy saving tips like upgrading to a smart thermostat and cooking outdoors more often in the summer season. He appreciated those energy saving tips, especially when I told him to upgrade his lights to LED. Okay, he did give me an issue with the lighting at first, but when I explained how much money he would save on his energy bills, he wanted to learn more energy saving tips. One important tip I had to push on him was keeping up with regular HVAC system maintenance and care. He didn’t want to get into all of it because he thought everything was so overpriced. He didn’t even want to invest in quality air filters because those were expensive as well. When he eventually learned that you save the most by keeping the HVAC running smooth, he enrolled into an HVAC service plan which saved him money and kept him worry-free. Now, I have to talk to him about saving up enough money to get a new roof on his house. I already know he’s going to fight me tooth and nail on that, but I’ll have to talk to him about how he doesn’t want his roof to start leaking and destroying his costly investment; his home.
