HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

My wife said we should have just gotten on a payment plan, and I really do wish I would have listened to her.

Our AC system is very old and while we were told to have it replaced instead of fixing it, we just didn’t have the money to do so. So now here we are calling for AC repair again because our cooling system broke down again. Honestly, if I realized that the AC system was just going to keep breaking down over and over again, I might have listened to the HVAC experts when they said to have it replaced. They warned us how the AC system was basically on its way out and it might not even be worth the cost to have it repaired. They said there was no guarantee that the cooling system would even last through this summer season, and I thought it was a risk we would have to take. I felt like I still needed to save up more money so that we could pay for the whole thing. My wife said we should have just gotten on a payment plan, and I really do wish I would have listened to her. So finally after calling for repair again, the HVAC professionals ended up telling us that they could no longer repair the cooling system anymore because it was completely dead and useless at this point. That’s when I had to try to force a smile on my face and I asked them if they had any good deals on newer cooling systems. I also had to ask them about their payment plan options of course, but fortunately we were able to find something within our budget.

When I was looking into improving the air quality at home, I decided to look into air purification systems.

When I saw how expensive some of the air purification systems were and the fact that it was recommended they were installed by HVAC professionals, I had to think more about it all.

I thought it would be nice to have a professional installation, but I also realized that it would be very expensive. I didn’t want to empty my savings account and then I looked into portable air purifiers. I was pleased when I saw that you could get portable air purifiers that were equipped with a UV light, and they even had powerful HEPA filters to eliminate 99.9% of contaminants in the air. I looked at a few different air purifiers were covered a large space and I ended up getting a few of these UV air purifiers. I was amazed with the improvement of the air quality in my home, and I was glad because I still had plenty of money leftover in my savings account. That’s a good thing because I have also been thinking about trading in my car and getting something much nicer that has a powerful climate control system too. My old car sometimes has issues with the cooling system which I don’t appreciate. I swear the cooling system doesn’t even start working until I have been driving for a good 10 minutes. I guess I could take my car to the auto repair shop to have it fixed, but that’s another expense I don’t really want.

I actually didn’t think I would have to replace the AC system so soon when I bought a home a few years ago.

The thing is, the AC system I didn’t realize was using the old refrigerant which was phased out completely by the government.

So when we had a refrigerant leak more recently, I thought it was going to be a simple fix, but it turned out that we had to replace our whole cooling system. The HVAC professional had to tell me a few times how the cooling system we were using required the old type of refrigerant and wasn’t compatible with the newer refrigerant. I had to ask if they had good payment plan options, which they had numerous options to choose from. So at least there was that. We actually had a highly energy efficient cooling system installed with a nice SEER rating. While the cooling system was costly to have installed, it was well worth it. The energy bills since having the system installed have lowered significantly, way lower than I expected to be honest. So we have been using this excellent cooling system and of course we have been getting our regular HVAC system maintenance. The thing that is bothering me now is the fact that we will have to replace the heating system soon, and we are still on a payment plan paying for the cooling system. The finances are going to be very tight, and I’m not feeling so good about that, especially with inflation and gas prices going out of control.

When I told my wife that we needed to have the roof replaced, I didn’t expect her to give me a big issue about it.

We had a reasonable amount of money saved up in our joint savings account, but she said there was something more important than the roof, and that was the HVAC upgrade.

I thought our HVAC system would last us a bit longer very easily, but she started talking about how the HVAC was too old and it was costing us too much money on the energy bills to use regularly. She explained that we needed something more energy efficient and she didn’t want to wait a couple of more years spending too much money on HVAC repairs, maintenance, and costly energy bills. She also said that the roof was in fair shape and if there were any leaks, we could patch up those spots with leak repair until we could save up more money to get the roof replacement job taken care of. I thought about it for a little while and I realized she was right, we could use a better HVAC system. The HVAC system we had was going on 13 years and while I hoped to have it until at least 15 years, I couldn’t ignore the good point my wife made about having an energy efficient heating and cooling system. So before I knew it, we were consulting with an HVAC professional trying to figure out the best HVAC system to have installed at our home. The ductless options were really appealing to us and I think that’s what we will go for.
