When I was in college, we had the RA on the floor who would steal from us.

It took a few months to figure it out, and even then we only caught him because of a webcam we hid in one of our rooms.

The guy only stole things we couldn’t report, like cash, booze, or marijuana. When we caught him, we couldn’t turn him in, so we beat his butt and stole everything we could from his room. That’s how I do things when someone dares to steal from me! With that in mind, I can’t wait to get my hands on the jerk who stole my air conditioner. I have a very small loft apartment, in an old building that has no central air conditioning. With this little square footage, the only way I can fit an AC unit into the place is to mount it on the window sill. This way the bulk of the AC unit is outside, and I can cool down the house without cramming it full of machinery. The air conditioner is mounted with brackets, and I thought I had it locked down pretty well, but obviously not well enough because someone used a crowbar to smash the brackets and take the AC unit. I am furious and I want revenge, but with the temps rising quickly, the first thing I need to do is get a new air conditioner. By next week this loft apartment will feel like a furnace, so I need to get revenge later and go take care of business right now.

I learned how to fix up the window mounted A/C units out of necessity, not a whim.

Some people learn new skills because they get bored and have time to kill.

For me, learning a new skill was a matter of being comfortable or spending the whole summer sweating bullets. Summers in the deep south are no joke, and it’s not unusual to get 90 plus degree weather with 95% humidity for days and weeks on end! Even in the middle of the night it remains uncomfortably hot outside. Staying inside is important for staying comfortable, but if you don’t have an air conditioner, being inside is even worse than being outside. When I was a teenager and my mom was working two jobs, I had to be the man of the house although I didn’t know what that meant. It all became clear when the air conditioner broke, and the inside temps got into the upper 90s. It was dangerous for my younger siblings to be in such heat, so I had to make an attempt to repair the air conditioning. It went about well as you would expect, and I only made the A/C problems worse. Late that night I went to a local motel, and stole one of their window mounted air conditioners. Using what I had learned from my failed first attempt, I did much better in tuning up and maintaining this air conditioning unit. My mom asked me where I had gotten the money for such a nice air conditioner, and I said that I had stolen it. She never mentioned it again.

My wife and I run a small business of renting beachside bungalows to tourists.

• It is seasonal work, as you might imagine, with 6 months of heavy business followed by six months of almost no business at all.

During the busy season we both stay booked constantly. My wife handles the bookings and the paperwork, while I am the handyman and make sure all of our properties stay in tip-top condition. Last summer was our eighth year in business, and our busiest season to date! There were a lot of issues, though, including a rash of air conditioner thefts that cost us a lot of money. You know how in major hotels the rooms all have giant air conditioners built right into the walls? Those are very expensive, but worth it because they are the best for cooling down a small space, and they are almost impossible to steal. In our beachside bungalows the walls are too thin, and the power grid too weak, to support all of those HVAC units. Instead we use the small, portable air conditioners that you can mount in a window using simple brackets. These are low in cost and provide adequate cooling for the guests, so everybody wins! Recently we learned the major downside of these A/C units, that being how small they are makes them very easy to steal. It is not our guests stealing the air conditioners, of course, it is people stealing the units from the outside. Being mounted in the window sill means that the air conditioners are exposed to the outside, and easy to rip off the brackets.
