The air quality in my home library

I have been working on converting my two car garage into a library.

I always wanted my own reading room, from when I was a kid.

I would ride my bike to the library every weekend, just to hang out in the cool and the quiet, reading books and getting lost in the worlds they created. I wanted to recreate that magic in my home, so I took down the garage doors and put in a new wall. I added new floors, and redid the ceiling. After adding all the shelves and the books it looked like a reading room, but it didn’t feel like one. I needed better air quality, and a superior cooling system, if I really wanted to capture the feel of a public library. I did some research, and learned that the reason libraries are kept so cold and dry is that the climate control is used for the benefit of the books, not the people reading them. Books have specific climate control conditions they need to stay in optimum condition for the longest amount of time. Humidity and books do not get along, so the air is run through dehumidifiers and made so dry to keep the books from accumulating moisture. The very cold temps you find in most libraries are also done for the lowering of humidity levels, because without the moisture in the air there is a little more wiggle room in terms of temperature. I decided that based on the size of my library I will need two dehumidifiers and a portable air conditioning unit.

Should I buy a geothermal heat pump?

Gas prices just keep going up, don’t they? It makes me wish I had one of those electric cars, but who has the money? As of late I have been thinking a lot about money.

  • There are so many things we have to buy a little at a time, so we don’t have much leeway in saving money on it.

Take gasoline, for example. You see those idiots filling up garbage bags with gasoline, and I understand where they are coming from in trying to save money, but it’s still stupid. Gas, like electricity, is only purchased a little at a time, which is why I have been thinking about investing in a geothermal heat pump. A geothermal heat pump draws upon an endless power supply – the geothermal energy generated by the earth itself. Just like solar power and wind power, geothermal power is limitless, and once you can harness it you can essentially use it for free forever. With that in mind, you might be wondering why everyone doesn’t use a geothermal heat pump – that is because of the cost. It is not cheap to acquire a geothermal heat pump, so you have to look at it like an investment. It will save you so much money on utility bills over the long term, but you might need to spend 10 years worth of energy costs all in one lump sum just to get the geothermal heat pump. I am still debating whether or not to get a geothermal heat pump, because it would require taking out a loan from the bank.

At the very least you need a dehumidifier

If you are serious about books, then you need to think about more than how they look on a shelf.

  • I know that not everyone cares about books and comics the way I do, but I love them.

I have been collecting them for years, and even converted my garage into a secure reading room where they could get the consistent air quality they needed. If you want to buy a book, read it, and pass it on, then god bless you for that. For me I read a book, and then put it carefully on a shelf in the reading room to preserve it. The highest quality of HVAC equipment has been set up specifically for that room, just to keep the temp and humidity levels even so the books always stay in the best possible condition. Just because you are serious about books doesn’t mean that you are rich, but that’s okay because you don’t need a dedicated HVAC system just for one room. If you can afford a few thousand bucks, then go for it, but you can accomplish the same goals with a high quality air purifier and dehumidifier. Books are much more forgiving when it comes to temperature as opposed to humidity. Humidity is the enemy of books, so at the very least get a dehumidifier for the room, and if you have enough books, then get two dehumidifiers. I would also get yourself a smart thermostat that can monitor the humidity levels of the room, and it will save you a whole lot of worry.

He didn’t look like an HVAC tech

My band was on the road enough that it was worth investing in our own stage setup.

  • When you are just starting out, then you play whatever bar or club will book you.

When you get lucky, like we did, and build up enough of a following, then you start booking bigger venues. At this point, we realized that we couldn’t rely on the amenities of the venues, we needed our own stage lights and sound gear. We also needed a cool stage we could set up and break down for transport. I had the idea that we should build some hidden air vents and ductwork into the stage setup. I had the band manager call around and find an HVAC tech who worked on custom jobs like this. The HVAC tech who showed up was not at all what we were expecting. He was into country music, not rock, so he had never heard of us, and to be honest he didn’t look like someone who could read, nonetheless get an HVAC certification. I was never so glad to be wrong, because it turns out this guy didn’t have an HVAC certification, but was a true master of sheet metal. He was able to take the measurements and specs of our stage setup and then go back to his farm and custom build us the air ducts, grates, and air vents that we required. He was so good, and so fast (not to mention cheap), we promised to recommend him to other bands who might need similar HVAC work done.
