For years, I’ve always been the one who needed to to check on the HVAC equipment when it came to lodging choices.

I’ve always been partial to the large wall unit air conditioners you find in many of the more motel like lodging choices.

I found that this sort of HVAC equipment really was far superior when it came to getting consistent quality heating and air. So when my wife suggested that we rent a vacation house, I was rather perplexed. The cost of the vacation house wasn’t really all that more than staying in a hotel. Plus, there was more room and it was closer to the things that we liked to do where we vacation. However, this meant that I wasn’t going back to a hotel where I was certain of the air conditioning. And where we like to vacation is notorious for being really hot. So after spending much of the day enjoying outside activities, I always loved the air conditioning time. While I was very wary of the HVAC unit, I decided to go along with this new lodging choice. And to my great surprise, not only was there quality heating and air, it was some of the best I’ve ever experienced. The vacation spot had new HVAC equipment that came chock full of the latest in HVAC technology. This place was really amazing. It had zone controlled HVAC and a smart thermostat that took care of everything. I have to admit that this sort of air conditioning was better than anything we even had at home. It was a great vacation with great air conditioning.

I remember when we had our current HVAC equipment installed.

• It’s been a dozen years ago or more.

But I can remember it all very clearly. That’s because we had just purchased this house and it was our first home. My wife and I had been married about 5 years at that point. We knew that a family was in the plans so we bought a house that would accommodate that plan. The seller of the house just outright refused to replace the clearly outdated HVAC unit that was here. So we ended up negotiating down the price rather significantly over that heating and cooling equipment. In turn, this allowed us to get really the latest in residential HVAC at the time. We had the money so we decided to get the best quality heating and air that we could get. And I remember the HVAC contractor telling us that we needed to be sure to register the HVAC equipment with the factory first. And then, he told us that we needed to make sure that the new HVAC equipment got consistent, seasonal HVAC maintenance every year. This would greatly increase the efficiency, operation and longevity of the HVAC unit. He told us not to wait because the HVAC unit was new but to get going with HVAC maintenance that very year. And we followed his advice. We’ve gotten heating maintenance in the fall and an air conditioning tune-up each spring. I figure that our HVAC equipment will last for a very, very long time.

I had always wanted a sort of game room or something.

• But my kids just weren’t interested at all in ping pong, pool or air hockey.

Of course, that didn’t mean that they didn’t spend endless hours playing games. My kids often preferred staying inside the heating and cooling of home to play games online than go outside and doing something fun. So my plans for that gameroom sort of fizzled. Once the kids hit highschool and junior high, it became clear that I would be needing a space of my own to get some peace and quiet. That’s when I started thinking about the gameroom idea again. But this time, I decided that I’d make it more of a Dad room. With the help of a couple of buddies, we erected some interior walls in the basement. From there, we added a couch a couple of TV’s and a couple of old recliners. It was at least a start and served its purpose. However, as time went by, I realized that my new space needed more in the way of good heating and cooling. Where we live we get some rough winter weather and the summer is plenty hot requiring months of air conditioning. My new space was set up in the basement where there was only one HVAC air vent. So I called the HVAC company and they installed a ductless heat pump in my game room. I’m now calling it a game room because I added some old school arcade games as well as a pool table. The ductless heat pump provides quality heating and air in my new game room.

So there were several things that I was sort of dreading when my wife and I finally decided to sell the house. The idea of going through an adult lifetime worth of stuff was high on the list of the stuff I didn’t want to do. But with that came the fact that we’d be living in an apartment for a year after we sold the house. I was not looking forward to apartment living. The memories of neighbors sharing walls, inadequate heating and cooling and cramped spaces didn’t help either. But first, we had a lot to do before we got to living in the apartment. I coordinated the HVAC equipment upgrade with the HVAC company. They were great to work with. The realtor suggested that we go with some of the latest in HVAC technology to entice prospective buyers. So the HVAC professionals were able to help me get the latest in residential HVAC without spending too much money. My wife took care of the kitchen upgrades and we did the rest together. All the packing and sorting was indeed as bad as I thought it would be. It’s tough going from a large home to a two bedroom apartment. It was all we could do to get out of the house by the deadline. However, I will say that the apartment we ended up choosing was way better than what we had envisioned. For one thing, the place had really good quality heating and cooling. The HVAC equipment was relatively new and was of really good quality. So that was definitely a blessing.
