I originally thought that the hardest part about being a parent would be over once all of my children were no longer toddlers. But as they slowly transitioned into teenagers—one by one—I quickly realized that my hardest days as a father lie ahead. You tell your son or daughter to not do something, only for them to spite you the minute they get a chance. I had to learn ways of navigating their reactions and what they were anticipating from me, and in a sense use “reverse psychology” to get them to conform to my rules. More often than not I feel like I’m talking to a brick wall. I tell them specifically that they are not allowed to adjust the thermostat for the central heating and cooling system. My wife and I are the ones who control the indoor climate at home; otherwise the air conditioner would be left on at 66 degrees and we’d come home to a fried HVAC system. In the winter our kids would have the heat up so high that our propane bill would be outrageous! We gave up on scolding them and finally bought a plastic lockbox to put over the thermostat for the central HVAC system. Somedays I wonder where I went wrong as a parent to need a lockbox over the HVAC thermostat, but the pragmatic side of my brain doesn’t care what it takes to maintain our energy budget. Hopefully it will program them into avoiding the urge to adjust the temperature if they go so many months or years without having the chance. Perhaps at some point we won’t need a lockbox on the HVAC thermostat.

It’s a fairly large city in a state that is somewhere in the middle in terms of its population level overall. Whenever there is a holiday dinner at our parents’ house, usually everyone in the family is able to attend. It’s nice having most of the immediate family within driving distance, especially if we ever need something from one another. I love doing a lot of the holiday cooking while my sister does most of the decorating at our parents’ house. My brother is a mechanical person. He does it as a side job and I pay him under-the-table so he can make a little bit of cash on the side that isn’t taxed. In return I get quality heating and cooling care at a tiny fraction compared to what I was paying with one of the few HVAC companies in my neighborhood. He doesn’t rip me off either. I try not to take my brother for granted and exchange my services as a cook, often sending him home with care packages that he can eat and enjoy with his wife. Recently I needed a new air conditioner and my brother helped me pick out a quality system to go in our house. After he ordered the equipment, he installed both the air conditioner and furnace. Thanks to my brother, my wife and I now have a much better heating and cooling system compared to what we had before.

I wanted to start a fire without matches or a lighters but had no idea what it was capable of doing once the flames got out of my control. It’s irreversible destruction, and some people don’t ever get to experience something like that on such a large scale, and at such a young age as well. I learned to respect heat and fire with the utmost caution. When I bought my first space heater in college, I did my research to find the safest one available. Some space heaters are more dangerous than others, especially if the one you buy lacks a tip-over shut-off switch. This safety feature cuts all power to the device if it is tipped over, either accidentally by yourself, a family member, or one of your pets. Imagine waking up to a burning house because your cat accidentally knocked your space heater over in the middle of the night while roaming the house.
