HVAC Repair Tips for Homeowners

I don’t usually labor on my home a/c unit, however I was a little short on money.

I had been putting in tons of extra hours at labor to help with what my wife Kim used to be making, but after having the baby, Kim decided she wasn’t going back to work.

Kim and I had no one to babysit, & the baby had to be at least six months old before any nannies would take her in, and the cost was almost as much as Kim would make if she had to labor only the hours the local nanny would take care of the baby. I am now working somewhere from sixty to seventy hours every week, & I am dead tired. I am cutting back on expenses by doing the smaller chores on my own. One of these chores I took on is cleaning the a/c unit. The local Heating, Ventilation, & A/C company had a do-it-yourself section on their website, & it offers step-by-step instructions on how to do the service. I had the air filter in hand, ready to change it, & I woke up with the filter still in my hand, & I was laying on the ground. Kim hadn’t called me in, & said she thought I was napping on the lounge chair. I had been sleeping with the air filter in hand, while doing repair on the a/c, & Kim thought I was okay. I learned one important lesson from this whole thing, & it wasn’t that Kim didn’t care as much for me as I thought she did! You don’t labor all night long & go outdoors in the heat of the sunshine to labor on the a/c unit.

I knew my dad was an HVAC technician.

• He was one of the best in our area.

It was because of him that I wanted to be an HVAC technician. I was in my last semester of HVAC school when they told us we would have a guest instructor for the rest of our classes. Everyone was excited and wondering who was going to be there. We knew we were going to be doing hand-on training, which helped the instructor decide who was going to be in his apprenticeship program. I went home that afternoon, and I was telling mom and dad we were going to have a guest instructor to help with our hands-on training. Dad laughed and told me he hadn’t seen me this excited since I got my car. He was right. I was excited. I was almost done with class, and all I had to do was take my certification exam. Dad told me I was doing fine, and just relaxed. When I got to class on Monday, I wasn’t the only one who was early. Nearly half the class was arriving early. There were some guys that acted like they didn’t care, but you could tell they were nervous. My question was why was my dad in my HVAC class? I thought there may be something wrong, until he smiled and winked in my direction. My dad was the guest instructor for the remainder of my HVAC class. I was more nervous than ever because I had to prove something to him and the lead HVAC instructor. Dad would probably expect more from me than anyone else.

I didn’t know my new home was going to be a wreck.

• I bought it online, knowing it was in the area I wanted to live, it was cheap, and it was a fixer-upper.

My idea of a fixer-upper, and the realtor’s idea of a fixer-upper, was on opposite ends of the spectrum. The house had no electricity, or HVAC. I asked what type of person would live in a home with no electricity and no HVAC. She told me that some religious sects don’t believe in modern conveniences. I nodded, knowing what she was saying, but I still couldn’t understand it. Since I had no other choice but to get to work, I thanked her and got out my phone. The first thing I did was go to Angi and look for an electrician in the area. I found one that could come to the house that afternoon. I now had everything set up to get electricity in the house. I needed someone who could help me choose an HVAC for my home, so I looked for the local HVAC company. I gave them my name and address, and told them I needed a complete HVAC system. They were happy to set me up, but it was going to take a week. I didn’t mind since I didn’t have electricity in the house. I needed a roofer, and someone who could help me repair the inside. I was lucky to find out the roofing company also did siding, because that was a necessity. I was beginning to think my fixer-upper was going to cost more money than ripping it down, and having a new house built.

When my mother was taken to the hospital, I was on a trip.

I had to book an emergency flight and get home to her.

I didn’t want her to think I wasn’t going to get home before her surgery, so I called my sister and she put mom on the phone. She was in tears when I told her I would be home in about three hours. I would be there for her when she went into surgery. I had to go because they were calling to board my plane. When I got into the airplane, I wasn’t thinking about where I was seated. My mind was on my mom. Five minutes later, I was thinking about the seating. I was sitting next to a man that was twice my size, and taking up half my seat. He was tall and needed extra leg room, but they wouldn’t let him move. I offered to give him the outer seat, but he said it would be worse when he started tripping the stewards. I then noticed how stale the air felt. I had the personal air vent pointed right at my face, but the air quality was even worse that way. The air vent was pouring out recycled air, and it was horrid. I was about to gag, the air quality was so bad. The man next me leaned over and asked if I was smelling anything off? I told him the air quality was bad, and there was nothing they could do to fix it until we landed. I planned on renting a car when I got off the plane, that way I would have excellent air conditioning and air quality on my way to the hospital.
