• For sure, I love my family and they are my absolute main priority in life.

They are the reason I spend so much time inside the commercial HVAC of the office earning a living. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. However,I’m also the sort of guy that needs to be quiet in order to balance my emotions and my thoughts. I work in a pretty high pressure situation where there can often be quite a bit of confrontation. That’s part of the job and it’s part of the job that I really don’t like. I’m not exactly a confrontational person so it takes a lot out of me when I have to lean into that side of the business. When I come home and walk inside the central air conditioning of my house to people yelling at each other, it’s not so great. Our kids are now at the age where they are always into each other about something. Whether it’s the thermostat setting or who wore whose sweater, there is always a high volume conversation going on. And it just gets to be too much. My wife pretty much took over the office that we were supposed to share. It’s now sort of her hobby center and her place to get away. So I ended up searching for a space of my own. I found it in the finished attic. I don’t know why the previous owner finished the attic with walls and a plywood floor. But it’s now my quiet space. And after the HVAC professional installed a ductless heat pump, it’s a super comfortable quiet space. This ductless heat pump provides amazing air conditioning and I barely have seen a blip on our utility bill.

I wasn’t so sure but my wife was set on us moving out of the city.

All I had ever known was living in a very large city.

And I’m talking about living right in the middle of it. I didn’t grow up in the central air conditioning of some house in the suburbs. No sir, I grew up in an apartment building in the city. That came with too much radiant heating in the Winter and not enough air conditioning in the Summer. My wife and I built a life in the city after we met in college. She comes from a rural area where there’s plenty of space and lots of nature. Living in the city was exciting for my wife but she really did miss all that nature. So over the last decade or so, we have been looking for a property outside the city that we could call home. I can essentially work from anywhere that has a wi-fi hook up and so can my wife. Moving out of the city and not going to the zone controlled HVAC of my office each day was no big deal. What was a big deal was renovating the old farmhouse that we ended up buying. I guess that farm had been sort of cut up into lots and sold off. We had the main lot that was 15 acres and came with the old farmhouse. Structurally, the farmhouse was in great shape and we proceeded to modernize it. But since it never had residential HVAC there were no air ducts. With no duct work that meant far too much chaos to have them installed. So we ended up going with a ductless multi-split system and have never looked back.

The pandemic still hasn’t left our home. After all the things we went through in order to not get Covid, we still ended up with it. We stayed cooped up inside the central air conditioning of our home for the better part of a year and half. We just stayed away until there was a vaccine. Fortunately for me, I was able to get vaccinated so when I got sick, it wasn’t all that bad. But my wife was a rare exception when it came to the Covid vaccines. So when she got it, she got walloped. And that has turned into this mysterious long Covid you read about on the news. As if getting thumped with full on Covid wasn’t enough, my wife now has such lingering effects from this virus. However, we also are doing something about it by making sure that we have the best indoor air quality we can get. We learned a lot about respiratory health over the past many months. And this was all new to me as I hadn’t heard of the benefits of indoor air quality. But it didn’t take me long at all to figure out just how vital it is to have air purification in our home. We wanted to give my wife’s respiratory system the best possible path to recovery so we went with the best air purifier we could find. The whole home air purification system is so amazing and does such a great job when it comes to the indoor air quality. This type of air purifier actually eliminates all of the airborne contaminants from the air. And it does this without me having to continually clean an air filter. It’s made a big difference for my wife and I’m thankful.

I’m not so sure just how the ductwork got missed. I looked through the reports from the home inspection we had done prior to making closing on this house. I couldn’t find any mention of the ductwork specifically. Clearly, the home inspector wanted us to know that the HVAC equipment needed to be completely replaced. So perhaps, this was his way of including the ductwork when it came to the HVAC equipment. But I sure didn’t read it that way. I figured that we’d just have the HVAC professionals come in and replace the heat pump. I just somehow didn’t figure on replacing the ductwork at all. So we met with the HVAC professionals and spent a couple of hours down at the HVAC company. We went through all the different options when it came to new residential HVAC. We were for sure interested in big time efficiency as well as good quality heating and air in general. We made all the arrangements and the HVAC contractor came out to kick things off with a site inspection. What he found was a ductwork system that was not going to be salvageable at all. And that caught me so by surprise. I trusted the HVAC contractor and indeed, he showed me just why the ductwork wouldn’t work. But the HVAC contractor knew that this was throwing a major wrench into our plans as well as our renovation budget. But thankfully, there was an HVAC equipment option I wasn’t familiar with. The ductless multi split heating and cooling system we went with was a lifesaver. And it gives us everything we wanted without having to replace the ductwork.
