A second chance to get it right.

Don’t you just love the Fall weather we have been having? I sure do! I love when I can drag out the sweatshirts, sip coffee on the porch under a blanket in the morning, and head out to watch a football game at the park.

I love everything about fall, for the most part.

The one thing that I don’t love is the fact that I need to have my HVAC system checked out before winter. I hate taking the day off just to wait for the technician and paying the fees to have it serviced. I know that I need to do this because if I don’t I may pay for it one morning when I wake up to a freezing cold house. My HVAC dealer is the only one in town so I am limited on who I can call. The last time they sent someone out I ended up having to make a second appointment because the guy messed up my furnace. He said that there was a problem with the intake unit and damaged it in the process of “trying” to fix it. I was so mad that I wanted to scream. The second technician fixed it free of charge but I shouldn’t have to make two appointments when I didn’t even want to make the first one to begin with. I learned my lesson and ask for the second guy each time and even if I have to wait for the appointment I don’t mind. At least I feel I can trust him to do a good job for me.

The new gym in town is just awesome.

The other thing I noticed was how clean it smelled in there and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that it is a new building with a high-tech HVAC system to remove any impurities from the air

My last visit to the doctor was less than exciting. They were routine blood work that indicated that I really needed to make some serious life changes. My doctor told me that I needed to increase my exercise as well as change some of my eating habits if I wanted to remain healthy for many years to come. Of course there’s no question about that because I have two children that depend on me and I wanted to be there for them for the long haul. A new fitness center had recently opened in town so I decided to take a drive over and check it out. I expected to see one of those big gyms that had the bright lights and loud music but instead I found a very relaxing atmosphere with some awesome workout equipment. They offered various classes in yoga and zumba where people like myself who were not professional athletes could feel comfortable while getting in better shape. They have all of you traditional workout equipment as well not to be high pressure that you find in some work out facilities. The other thing I noticed was how clean it smelled in there and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that it is a new building with a high-tech HVAC system to remove any impurities from the air. The temperature was comfortable and I think it will be a perfect place for me to make some of the changes my doctor has indicated I need to do. After speaking with the staff I’m actually looking forward to going there a couple of times a week and improving my health overall.

Friendly advice from a not-so-friendly neighbor.

Did you ever have someone that gave you an uneasy feeling? I’m sure you can relate when I tell you about the neighbor I have next door. There’s an older gentleman that lives on one side of me and he is constantly watching me to see what I am doing. I think he feels I have no idea how to take care of a house. Each time I do any sort of work in the yard or small repair on the house I feel as though he is judging me. I wish he would just mind his own business. At least that’s how I felt until the other day when he stopped me in my driveway. I thought he was going to tell me I was doing everything wrong but it turned out he wanted to help me. He had noticed that I was working around the house getting things ready for winter and he gave me some advice that surprise me. I’ve only owned the house for about 6 months so I had no idea that I should cover my outside HVAC unit so the snow and ice didn’t damage it. I really thought all I had to do was turn off the air conditioner and turn on the heat but he told me that the buildup of heavy snow and ice could actually damaged the inside of the unit. He took me over to his place and showed me a cover that he had built that was sitting in his shed and offer to help me build one as well. As I talk to him I realized that he wasn’t necessarily judging me for what I didn’t know but he was observing to see what I might need help with as a new homeowner.

Re-acclimating to my old home.

Growing up in the Northeast I couldn’t wait to get away from it.

When I left after college and moved to the Southwest I never thought I would return. Of course that was 30 years ago and a lot has changed since then. When my parents, you are quite elderly had to move into an assisted living facility I knew I needed to be closer to them to help out. My children were grown and I divorced years ago so I really had no reason to stay in my current location anyway. I was able to transfer to an office closer to where my parents live and I packed up last summer to move back home. I moved into my parents house so my living arrangements we’re all set, however, on a personal level I had to make some serious adjustments to re-acclimate myself to the colder climate. One of the first things I did was head out to purchase some warmer clothing because I hadn’t owned a winter coat in years. I had some money available from selling my house at my prior location so I made some adjustments to my parents house as well. I immediately replaced the old HVAC system, that was nearly 30 years old with a newer and more efficient one. I had the house re-insulated to save money on energy cost and added an HVAC unit to the detached garage so I wouldn’t have to deal with a freezing-cold vehicle each morning. It is just the beginning of fall and already we have cooler mornings so I know I will greatly appreciate all of these changes once the full force of winter arrives.
